Review by Peter Brown

The German Bundeswehr has its own high-tech training centre, similar in concept to the well-known US Army OPFOR facility where all styles of modern ground warfare can be taught and practised using simulation equipment while being monitored by the latest recording technologies. The dual German and English text covers the Letzlingen centre's development over a ten-year period, describing how it was set up and operates. It caters for full-scale mechanised battle group manoeuvres and also trains troops for peacekeeping and peacemaking duties, complete with rioting inhabitants, insurgents and civilian aid agencies.

The book is fully illustrated in colour showing the many types of equipment used there, including Leopard 2, Marder infantry vehicles, Gepard and Roland AA vehicles, Wiesel, M113 series carriers, Luchs armoured cars, Fuchs troop carriers, the Skorpion mine layers and variety of soft-skin support vehicles. Photos include close-ups of simulation equipment and show them very much "in action" with very effective locally-applied camouflage. Also shows are the troops themselves, both vehicle crews and infantry, in the latest-issue uniforms with the G36 5.56mm rifles.

An ideal choice for modern army modellers seeking good reference material, produced to the same high quality as the parent Tankograd Militarfahrzeug series, it is available from several distributors. For more details contact the publishers Verlag Jochen Vollert on jochenvollert@tankograd.com
