Voyager Model 1:35 Set #PE35297 for Dragon kit #6460
Review by Jenny Croft

Dragon
Introduction:

The Voyager update set is for Dragons recent Brummbar Mid production kit 6460 and is released as the “Basic” set along with PEA135 Brummbar Mid Version Side Skirts and PE 35298 Brummbar Early/ Mid Version Fenders. The “Basic” set covers what the other two sets have not covered.

The Update Set:

The set contains seven etch frets of various gauges, four resin parts, eighteen turned brass parts, 2 pieces of brass tube, a piece of 0.3mm steel wire for hinges, a piece of 0.4mm brass tube, a piece of 0.5mm and 1mm plastic rod & a piece of braided copper cable.

Starting off with the roof of the Brummbar, we need to remove the drain channels/shot deflectors from both hatches, from the slide of the gunners’ site and then the slide itself with its guide channel. We also remove the molded on hinge detail for the hatches & the abundance of molded on tie downs.

The five pistol ports are detailed with new chain including the internal securing mounts. The large double hatch/MG armored plate is totally replaced, with locking mechanism; MG mounts for ground or anti aircraft defense and new hinges. The commanders’ hatch, hinges and locking mechanism are replaced as well. A new armored slide and channel for the gunners’ site are also provided. New drain channels/shot deflectors for the hatches and slide, along with delicate tie downs for around the top of the superstructure and around the gun mantlet are provided with backing plates.

Onto the rear of the superstructure, the rear access hatch has new hinges and locking mechanism as well as a more detailed antenna base and a new crow’s foot antenna for the command variant. The bracing adjoining the superstructure to the engine deck is also provided as well as a new bracket for the fire extinguisher.

The engine deck has new latches for all the access panels and a new tool stowage box. The hull rear has a new cover for the muffler, tool clamps for the crank as well as a resin hood for the exhaust pipe. The Muffler gets replacement straps and there is a new flange for the joint between upper and lower hull.

The right hand side has a full replacement air filter with resin filters and a photo etched bracket giving great definition and detail in comparison to the Dragon parts. New brackets for the tow cables in etch as well as soft copper braided cable which is more pliable than the dragon offered tow cable. A track tool, new jack clamps along with some detail parts for the jack complete the right side detail.

New tow pintles are provided in etch for the hull front in etch with tiny metal replacement rivets as well as a bar for replacement tracks, on the transmission are fittings for more spare tracks. The drivers’ periscope also gets a PE rain guard. A horseshoe is also included.

The left hand side has parts to detail the Bosch headlight, jack block and tool fittings for the spanner. On the left rear fender is a Notek convoy light which is detailed fully with etch and a rear reflector.

The large tool locker on the left hull rear is replaced with an all new photo etched one; this has full interior fittings for two S clamps, axe, bolt cutter, shovel, crowbar and gun cleaning rods. The gun cleaning rods are provided but none of the other tools are except for the shovel head. The resin part for the brush for the gun cleaning rod is for what looks like a 75mm bore, the brush is actually wider than the bore of the gun, and the round indentation in the tool box is so the bore brush will fit in so a larger one will need to be made if shown fully opened.

Lastly two cartridges and cartridge cases are provided to add as you wish.

Conclusion:

The Voyager “Basic” set for the Brummbar is anything but basic, offering a more than comprehensive detail set for the Dragon Brummbar mid production variant.

Highly recommended.
